Crafting Perfection: A Custom Aluminium Case for the Pioneer SA-9500 II with Schaeffer AG

Dean Wright February 6, 2025

In the world of hi-fi, aesthetics matter just as much as performance. When I set out to design a unique aluminium case for my vintage Pioneer SA-9500 II amplifier, I knew that precision and quality were non-negotiable. That’s why I turned to Schaeffer AG, a renowned CNC manufacturer based in Berlin, Germany. Their expertise in machining front panels for technical equipment, including high-end audio gear, made them the perfect partner for this project.

The Vision: A Custom Aluminium Cover

The Pioneer SA-9500 II is already a stunning amplifier, but I wanted to push its aesthetics even further. My goal was to create a 5mm thick aluminium cover that not only protected the unit but also enhanced its design. Inspired by the clean lines and precision engineering of high-end hi-fi equipment, with the help of Schaeffer AG Front Panel Designer I incorporated beveled grooves into the design, adding a refined, modern touch to the amplifier’s timeless look.

Schaeffer AG: A Legacy of Precision

Founded in 1998, Schaeffer AG has built a reputation for excellence in CNC machining, specializing in custom front panels for various industries, including audio, medical, and industrial applications. Their state-of-the-art facility in Berlin is home to advanced CNC machines and a team of expert technicians who bring precision and craftsmanship to every project. What sets them apart is their attention to detail and commitment to quality, ensuring that every piece they manufacture meets the highest standards.

The Manufacturing Process: A Firsthand Experience

Visiting Schaeffer AG’s Berlin factory was an eye-opening experience. Walking through their facility, I witnessed the intricate CNC milling process, where raw aluminium transforms into finely machined components. Their skilled technicians meticulously programmed and operated the machines, ensuring every cut was precise to the micron.

Seeing the design come to life was incredible. The level of precision in the beveled grooves and smooth anodized finish exceeded my expectations. The final piece was not just a protective case—it was a work of art, perfectly complementing the Pioneer SA-9500 II’s aesthetic and build quality.

The Results: A Fusion of Craftsmanship and Design

Once fitted onto the amplifier, the new aluminium cover elevated its visual appeal and presence. The sleek, modern finish paired beautifully with the vintage design, creating a unique blend of classic and contemporary. More than just an aesthetic upgrade, the aluminium case also adds durability and heat dissipation benefits, making it both a functional and artistic enhancement.

Industrial & Hi-Fi Photography: Capturing the Process

As a hi-fi photographer, documenting this project was just as important as designing the case itself. During my visit, I captured detailed images of Schaeffer AG’s manufacturing process, highlighting their skilled craftsmanship and advanced CNC technology. The final shots showcase not only the finished aluminium cover but also the meticulous engineering that went into its production.

Capturing the Soul of Sound: A Product Photographer's Journey with Vintage Amplifiers

Dean Wright October 8, 2024

Welcome to the world of high-fidelity audio, where vintage amplifiers reign supreme, and each piece of equipment tells a story. As a Hi-Fi photographer passionate about vintage audio photography, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some stunning amplifiers that not only look great but also sound incredible. Today, I want to share my thoughts on three iconic models: the Pioneer SA-9500 II, Sony TA-F4, and Onkyo M-8000. Each amplifier has its unique charm, and I’ve aimed to capture their essence through my lens.

Pioneer SA-9500 II: The Classic Beauty

First up is the Pioneer SA-9500 II. This classic amplifier is not just a feast for the ears; it’s also a visual masterpiece. With its robust build and sleek design, it commands attention. Audiophiles rave about its warm, rich sound that brings music to life. The SA-9500 II features a solid power supply and an impressive frequency response, making it a favorite for vinyl lovers and digital enthusiasts alike.

When photographing this beauty, I focused on capturing its elegant lines and retro vibe. The interplay of light on its polished surface created a visual narrative that complements its audio prowess. This amplifier deserves to be showcased, and I aimed to do just that through thoughtful composition and lighting techniques.

Sony TA-F4: The Workhorse

Next, we have the Sony TA-F4. This powerhouse has earned its stripes in the hi-fi community for its reliability and exceptional sound quality. With its unique design and dual transformer layout, the TA-F4 delivers clarity and depth, whether you’re listening to classical music, beats or rock.

In my product photography, I highlighted its industrial look, showcasing the robust components that contribute to its performance. The contrast between the amplifier’s metallic elements and the warm hypnotic VU meters creates an inviting image that resonates with fellow audiophiles.

Onkyo M-8000: Where Vintage Meets Modern

Lastly, let’s talk about the Onkyo M-8000. This amplifier is a rare gem that brings together vintage aesthetics and modern performance. Known for its powerful output and versatility, the M-8000 pairs seamlessly with today’s audio gear, making it a favorite among music lovers who appreciate the best of both worlds.

In my recent shoot, I showcased the Onkyo M-8000 elegantly sitting atop the modern Sony Atmos receiver STR-DN1080, a perfect juxtaposition of vintage and contemporary audio technology. Accompanying the M-8000 are the System Audio Saxo 50 speakers, known for their impressive soundstage and clarity. Although not widely discussed, the Saxo 50 has garnered praise for its ability to deliver detailed highs and robust lows, making them an excellent match for the Onkyo amplifier.

These speakers excel in stereo music, providing a rich and immersive listening experience. Additionally, they work exceptionally well as left and right speakers in a Dolby surround setup, enhancing the cinematic experience with their expansive soundstage. Audiophiles appreciate how these speakers can fill a room with rich sound, perfectly complementing the M-8000’s powerful output.

In the wide-angle shot, you can see the amplifier positioned gracefully alongside the Saxo 50 speakers, capturing the essence of a well-rounded audio setup. The close-up highlights the intricate controls of the M-8000, while a smartphone streaming music through the PowerAmp app adds a modern touch to this vintage ensemble. This scene not only tells a story of audio evolution but also emphasizes the richness of sound that both devices deliver.

The Art of Amplifier Photography

Capturing these amplifiers is more than just snapping photos; it’s about telling their story. Each shot I take is a reflection of my love for hi-fi audio and the artistry of product photography. Whether it’s the polished wood grain of the Pioneer SA-9500 II, the sturdy design of the Sony TA-F4, or the unique vintage-modern fusion of the Onkyo M-8000, my goal is to create images that resonate with fellow enthusiasts.

If you're a hi-fi manufacturer or a brand looking for compelling product photography that showcases your audio equipment, let's connect! Together, we can create stunning visuals that capture the soul of your products and resonate with your audience.

The Power of Environmental Portraits: Showcasing People in Their Unique Spaces

Dean Wright September 9, 2024

At Dean Wright Photography, we believe that every portrait should tell a story. Environmental portraits take this concept a step further by not only capturing the essence of the individual but also placing them in an environment that reflects their personality, profession, or creative process. Whether it's an artist in their studio or an architect standing proudly in front of their latest project, these portraits go beyond standard studio setups to reveal more about the subject.

What Are Environmental Portraits?

Environmental portraits are taken on location, often in a space that has significance to the individual being photographed. The environment serves as a narrative backdrop that enhances the portrait, giving the viewer more context about the subject’s life or work. For example, consider a lawyer photographed in their office or a musician shot in their rehearsal space—these environments help to tell the story of who they are, offering more depth than a studio shot could provide.

Why Choose an Environmental Portrait?

The strength of an environmental portrait lies in its ability to tell more of a story in a single frame. Take the example of an artist standing in their studio with a canvas behind them, or an architect sat inside one of their completed buildings. The setting gives instant context and tells the viewer something about what this person does, their craft, and their identity.

Would the same impact be felt if these individuals were photographed in a neutral studio setting? The answer is likely no. While a studio portrait can be professional and polished, it doesn’t always communicate the individuality or personal story of the subject.

Who Should Consider Environmental Portraits?

Environmental portraits are perfect for those in creative and professional fields who want their images to reflect more than just their appearance. At Dean Wright Photography, we’ve worked with a wide range of clients, including actors, musicians, architects, and business leaders, capturing them in locations that speak to who they are and what they do. Some examples include:

  • Architects photographed at one of their completed developments.

  • Artists in their studios, surrounded by their work.

  • Musicians shot in rehearsal spaces or on stage.

  • Corporate professionals in offices or creative workspaces.

  • Athletes photographed in gyms, arenas, and sports fields.

The Importance of Composition in Environmental Portraits

A well-crafted environmental portrait balances the individual and the setting, making both elements work together to create a powerful image. Composition is key here, and it’s something we excel at. Whether the subject is standing in front of a large-scale painting in their studio or positioned in an industrial workspace, the background is just as important as the subject themselves.

For example, a shot of developers William Murray and David Twohig, taken outside an iconic London building they helped design, allows the setting to reinforce their expertise in property development.

Similarly, a portrait of artist Susanne Kolb standing in her studio with one of her large-scale paintings in the background gives the viewer insight into her creative world, making the portrait even more compelling.

Versatility Across Platforms

One of the key benefits of environmental portraits is their versatility. Unlike traditional studio portraits, which may be confined to professional uses, environmental portraits often have a lifestyle aspect that makes them more usable across various platforms. These images can be perfect for LinkedIn profiles, but they’re also well-suited for social media, magazine features, or even personal branding websites.

Many of our clients have found that these portraits are ideal for use across multiple channels—whether they’re an actor looking to stand out on casting websites or a business leader wanting to showcase a more personal side on Instagram. The natural, context-rich setting of environmental portraits makes them engaging and relatable.

Challenging Yet Rewarding

Shooting on location always comes with its own set of challenges—whether it’s managing lighting in less controlled environments or finding the perfect composition within a space. But the results speak for themselves. At Dean Wright Photography, we bring portable studio lighting on location, ensuring that we maintain high-quality lighting while also incorporating natural light and the unique textures of the environment.

Individuality and Authenticity

An environmental portrait is, by default, a unique experience. Each location is personal and meaningful to the subject, which brings out more of their personality. From artists and lawyers to tech entrepreneurs and athletes, these portraits provide a glimpse into their world in a way that a standard studio portrait cannot.

Bringing Out the Best in Our Clients

At Dean Wright Photography, we find that subjects are often more comfortable and relaxed when they’re in their own space. This comfort translates to more authentic and expressive portraits. Whether it’s an artist coming alive in their studio or a lawyer showing their confidence in their office, environmental portraits tend to capture more of the subject’s true self.

Conclusion

Environmental portraits offer a unique and impactful way to tell your story through photography. Whether you’re an artist, a professional, or anyone looking for a portrait that goes beyond the typical studio setting, Dean Wright Photography will work with you to create an image that truly reflects who you are.

If you’re ready to take your portrait photography to the next level, get in touch with us to book your environmental portrait session today.

From hybrids and electric cars to 4x4s and classic vehicles, there’s nothing in the genre that London car photographer Dean Wright hasn’t seen before. We love how different his style is from what’s currently in vogue; rather than moody shadows, he uses a well recovered and retouched style that balanced both highlights and shadows for even lighting. Yet, his rich contrast and eye for reflections and lines give his work a captivating quality that’s unmistakably his. Dean also regularly uses interior shots and lifestyle settings to add to the sense of a “car story” on display!
